SU commences first University E-tramural games

By Ian Zane T. Esparaga | April 6, 2021

The 2021 Silliman University ETramural Games officially kicked off yesterday, April 5.

The SUSG Sports and Recreation Committee together with the University Athletics and PE Department led the opening ceremony via Silliman University’s official Facebook page with over 900 live viewers.

Asst. Prof. Meriam Ramacho graced the opening remarks while Silliman University President, Dr. Betty McCann also shared a message of sportsmanship and teamwork to the players.

“Here at Silliman, we just do not focus on cognitive development, we give equal emphasis on developing social and emotional skills, service orientation, and fair play. This virtual sports intramural is not so much on who wins or loses but more on how the players play the game as one.”

The lighting of the intramural flame grabbed the attention of the opening ceremony and brought nostalgia to the students. According to SUSG Sports and Recreation Committee Vice-Chairperson, Robbie Hascoet, the Roblox-inspired torch lighting came from a suggestion of making it virtual as well. Sillimanian students, Zach Toñacao, Jayvie Go, Ronald Tomarong, Pert Cadayday, and Nicholas Villarosa made the SU Gymnasium using the online game platform.

“They posted a picture of their Roblex creation of SU Hall and so we decided to contact them asking if they were able to recreate the SU Gymnasium and from there we guided them with the videography and all,” Hascoet shared to tWS.

SUSG President, Jose Paolo Echavez, also shared the same sentiments.

“The highlight is, without a doubt, the lighting of the etramurals torch in the virtual SU gym created in Roblox, a video game. You cannot deny the epicness and competitive spirit oozing through the screen,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Departmental Cheering Competition commenced right after the opening ceremony where the College of Nursing bagged first place followed by the College of Business and Administration, Senior High School, and Medical School respectively.

Among Us and Chess also started during the first matchday while Mobile Legends, DOTA, Call of Duty Mobile, Valorant, Dancesport, and Online Takyan will follow through in the next days.

The Virtual Run, despite causing confusion during the players’ meeting last April 4, will still push through. Concerns regarding the online run for not being part of the overall scoring system as well as the use of the Strava app were brought up.

Championship games of each sports will be streamed live in the SUSG Sports and Recreation Committee Facebook page.
