SU relocates tennis courts

By Allianah Junnice Bolotaulo | February 1, 2024

The Silliman University (SU) lawn tennis court was relocated to the Junior High School Kalauman grounds to provide space for other university-wide events. The relocation process started in late 2023.

Engr. Edgar Ygnalaga Jr., Superintendent of the SU Buildings and Grounds, said that the relocation started with the bleachers and comfort rooms of the court.

Ang lights didto, ga install nami. Ga preparation nami didto ug poste, and then katong net, dayon katong scoring board, plus katong fence na wire,” he said.

(We are already installing the lights there. We are doing preparations for the posts, and then the net, the scoring board, plus the wired fence.)

According to Asst. Prof. Dionesio Piñero of the SU Athletics department, the area where the court is situated will be converted into an open grass field.

The new functional space can be used for shows in the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium, major events in the gymnasium, and flag ceremonies of senior high school (SHS) students.

With its proximity to the SU Main Library and SHS building, it is also seen as an additional area where students can use the provided tables to study.

Engr. Ygnalaga described the move as creating options in the university’s “dual preparation” for graduation ceremonies.

Ang first option sa Luce lobby na mao ang gamiton sa graduation. Ang second option, ari sa gym,” he said.

(The first option is using the Luce Auditorium lobby for graduation while the second option is the gym.)

The new space will allow graduates and guests to have designated places for the said ceremonies.

As of writing, the relocation is 90 percent in progress, as confirmed by Engr. Ygnalaga.

“As of now, relocation sa mi, wala pay date na mo start ug demolish sa existing concrete tennis court,” he said.

(As of now, we are still on the relocation, there is no set date on when the demolition of the concrete tennis court will start.)
