By Allianah Bolotaulo | September 4, 2023

After five years of presidency, the Silliman University Board of Trustees (SU BOT) renewed Dr. Betty Cernol McCann’s presidency after a board action on May 27.

McCann will continue serving as the institution’s chief executive until 2027, extending her original term due on May 31.

During her presidency,  the university’s commitment to becoming environment-friendly and sustainable was institutionalized by implementing the SU Environmental Principles, Policies, and Guidelines.

Digital technology within the university was also enhanced during her term through staff and faculty retooling and upskilling, SU Library digitization and modernization, and the creation of the Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center of SU.

McCann’s installation in 2018 marked the first time a woman became president of SU.

She was also selected for high-ranking positions in different alliances during her term.

From 2018 to 2021, she was the president of the Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia (ACUCA).

Afterwards, in 2019, she assumed the presidency of the Asian University Digital Resource Network for Local Knowledge (AUDRN-LK).

More recently, she was designated as acting president and vice president of the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges, and Universities (ACSCU) on Aug. 14, 2023.

She is the university’s 13th president, succeeding Dr. Ben S. Malayang III.
