Miss Silliman ready to implement advocacy project

by Francis Ryan Pabiania | October 23, 2021

After conquering the online pageant scene, Mayumi Mari Villacastin Maghuyop started working on her joint advocacy project to be implemented in the university.

The 21-year-old Speech and Theatre Arts student said that her advocacy, “Gender Equality” with an emphasis to protect the rights of the most vulnerable members of the communities from violence, was “received very well.”

In a statement she shared in Miss Silliman, violence in 2020 had increased, “the urgency to combat this danger has never been louder; the call for solidarity is clear.”

Being vocal about her advocacy, she has already started her plans and collaborations with the Office of Students Services, Student Organizations and Activities Division (SOAD), and Guidance Office and Peer Advocacy Program to implement the “system based- like” project in the university. As of press time, the details of the program have yet to be finalized.

However, about 25 individuals of Libho Women’s Self Help Group received food donations recently. This is part of the outreach project they have already kicked off for the Miss Silliman Foundation, in coordination with SOAD, and their annual charity event tradition.

“It is a responsibility more than anything. Miss Silliman in its Diamond year should be a year where we make the important changes and relearn values that are long overdue.” Maghuyop said.

Recounting her pageant experience, she said that it allowed her to have a larger perspective of what she can and should be doing as a member of the community.

For this year, she added that they want to emphasize “working together even when we’re apart” and highlight each candidate’s personal project every month.

“I really hope our reign this year will be another example for the queens to come– we want to make projects that last and create changes for the better for the people we can help,” she said.

Maghuyop is the 75th Miss Silliman. She is with Janica Aljanna Nicole Lim, who won as Cover Girl, and Kamille Faith Sardua as Headline Girl.

Meanwhile, Aia Jhanine Teves and Gia Marie De la Torre placed third and fourth runners-up, respectively.
