In a display of athleticism and teamwork, Silliman University (SU) Vernon and Channon Halls cemented their titles as the overall champions in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, during the Interdormitory Sportsfest 2025 held April 11 to 13.
The three-day sports event featured various competitions such as basketball, volleyball, larong pinoy, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), badminton, chess, and mental sports with activities like the spelling bee, quiz bowl, and quiz bee included to cater to a wider range of interests.
Dormers from Vernon Hall dominated the men’s division in volleyball, chess, and MLBB, while securing second place in basketball.
Monapil Cottages clinched the first runner-up spot with strong finishes in larong pinoy and Mobile Legends.
Meanwhile, Woodward and Doltz Hall tied for second runner-up following consistent performances across multiple events.
For the women’s category, Channon Hall dormers claimed the championship with triple wins in badminton, chess, and MLBB.
Trailing behind Channon Hall were Sampacena Cottages, which bagged first runner-up in basketball, badminton, volleyball, and MLBB, while last year’s champion, Larena Hall, settled as second runner-up.
Moreover, Edith Carson Hall was hailed as the inaugural winner of the banner-making competition, which replaced the bench cheering from previous editions.
In the mental sports mixed men and women category, Sampacena and Monapil, Doltz Hall, and Larena Hall emerged as champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up, respectively.
“Monapil has the smallest number of people out of all the dorms, so it was tough trying to assign players for every sport,” said Jules Igot, a resident of Monapil.
He added, “We kept pushing each other with lines like last ‘hunat nalang’ and ‘daog lagi ni, salig ra.’”
(We kept pushing each other with lines like “this will be the last leap” and “we’re going to win, just believe.”)
Planning this year’s sportsfest
The Interdorm Sportsfest is organized by the Dormitory Management Council (DMC) of the Student Housing and Residence Division (SHRD) and the SU Student Government (SUSG) Dorm Life Committee (DLC)
To reflect dormers’ preferences, the SUSG DLC conducted a survey to gather input on activities for this year’s event.
According to Dorm Resident Council President Mary Elaiza Arabia, they reintroduced badminton and chess and added the spelling bee, quiz bowl, and quiz bee, including banner making contest to “encourage participation.”
However, she highlighted that a major challenge in organizing such was “scheduling” since the event took place after the midterms week.
“It required significant time and effort, as several factors had to be considered, such as permits, requisitions, and the financial aspect,” Arabia said.
She added, “Many of the organizers were balancing their academic workload with event preparation.”
On scheduling, Arabia emphasized the collaboration with the Athletics Department.
The annual sportsfest aimed to “promote unity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie among all dormitory residents on campus” by providing them with opportunities to showcase their talents and skills through sports.
