SU college fair to prep SHS students for tertiary educ

By Carla Adeline Via

To help graduating senior high school (SHS) students make “informed decisions” on pursuing their higher education, Silliman University (SU) is set to hold its first City-Wide College Fair at the SU Gymnasium on Oct. 8.

The one-day fair will cater to grade 12 students from various public and private schools across Dumaguete City and other nearby units in Negros Oriental.

According to Yolanda Elenity Luz V. Maxino, head of SU Marketing and Recruitment Office, SHS students are the main prospects of the event since it is “critical for them to actively explore potential colleges to apply for their higher education.”

“Colleges can nurture their interest and encourage them to apply. Our goal is for them to know and gather detailed information about the various academic programs in our university,” she furthered.

A total of 18 academic units, except for Divinity School, and six SU offices will station their booth around the gym during the event.

Maxino furthered that invited students will also immerse in SU’s campus life, and explore degree options and scholarships by meeting faculty and representatives from these colleges.

A set of activities will be conducted during the morning session at 8 a.m. and afternoon session at 1 p.m. to accommodate all participating schools.

These include the Silliman Amazing Race, a highlight event where each booth will prepare tasks for students to accomplish in an “informative yet fun way of engagement.”

Various campus groups such as the Campus Choristers, Men’s Glee Club, SU Band, will perform with special cheer dances from the College of Nursing and College of Arts and Sciences.

Moreover, Maxino revealed that the college fair was part of the university’s marketing plan aimed at increasing the enrolment for next school year.

Following the proposal and approval of the activity during the Dean’s Conference, an orientation of the program flow and simulation of the Silliman Amazing Race was held last Oct. 1.

The Recruitment and Marketing Team also shared that they are eyeing to make the fair a “recurring event” in SU.

“We will ask all the participants to evaluate the event using a feedback form. This will help us in improving the event as we institutionalize it,” Maxino said.

The event is supported by the Department of Education – Dumaguete City Division, and spearheaded by the Recruitment and Marketing Team of the Admissions Office in coordination with the Guidance Center, Office of Media and Public Affairs, and Information and Communications Technology Division.
