Athletics dept. to change cheerpop venue, improve medical services

Despite officials’ decision to exclude them from joining the 2026 All-University Intramurals, the Silliman University Senior High School (SUSHS) Department reinstated their participation through a resolution passed last Jan. 8.

The resolution, authored by SHS representatives and co-authored by College of Business Administration representatives, was approved during the Student Assembly’s 8th regular session.

According to University Athletics department director Asst. Prof. Dionesio Piñero II, he requested the SHS to pass a resolution to limit parents from interfering with the college Intramural games.

“All the college students are enjoying, [but] here comes your parents. It should not be, but if all the college students come to me and complain, what will I do?” he said.

A parent/guardian letter and acknowledgement form is included in the resolution urging parents to raise concerns through proper channels in line with the SHS Intramural Participation Guidelines.

Last March 2025, Piñero cited that a consensus decision by the administration and sports coordinators to exclude SHS stemmed from the department’s original affiliation with the School of Basic Education.

He noted that the department should focus on its annual Pasiklaban Sports Festival, however, discussions were later opened to reconsider the decision.

Following the approval of the appeal, SUSG Sports and Recreation Committee Interim Vice-Chairperson Adrian Irvin Remoroza said that a deans conference is still needed for the full implementation of the resolution.

“To entirely confirm their participation, it needed a [deans conderence]. But unfortunately, what we saw man gud is that [a deans conference] is impossible to happen before intramurals,” he explained.

Piñero furthered that Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research Dr. Lily Ann Bautista already permitted the participation of the SHS department ahead of the deans conference.

“I informed [the VPAAR] the senior high school is joining back again in the college intramural games and [they said] so long as it will be approved by your department,” he said.

Venue changes and improvements

Meanwhile, Remoroza revealed they are eyeing on potential venue changes this year for the Cheerpop competition amid ongoing renovations at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex where it was first held last Intramurals.

“Hopefully maka kita mi inside campus. We’re planning [at] Cimafranca or gym but given the large numbers of our students, I don’t think the gym can handle this. We’re still working on that,” he said.

Moreover, Piñero shared that this year’s Intramurals will see improved medical services led by the SU Red Cross Youth and SUSG Health Emergency Response Team.

“They had already finished their training with representatives set by each of the colleges so that when they do their practices in or out of the campus, they have their own medics,” he said.

This year’s All-University Intramural Games will hold the theme “Embracing Christ’s Peace, Cultivating Care, and Re-Visioning Excellence” and is scheduled on Feb. 16 to 20.
