McCann: SU to bolster performance among Asian HEIs

All-Univ Convocation ‘25

Amid key educational trends established in the region, Silliman University President Betty Cernol-McCann vowed to place SU as a model among 21st-century Asian institutions that is responsive and committed to the global learning environment.

“Let us cultivate a learning environment that is both globally competitive and deeply human,” she said during the All-University Convocation at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium last July 30.

In her speech titled “The Future of Asian Higher Education is Now,” McCann discussed the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) such as SU in focusing on digital transformation, internationalization and competitiveness, and lifelong learning and skills development.

“This strength in Asian universities is actively forging partnerships, joint degree programs, and faculty exchanges […] We must [produce] graduates who can compete and collaborate on an international scale while being deeply rooted in their cultural identity and values,” she said.

Among the current initiatives McCann highlighted are partnerships with universities for skills-building, students’ global recognitions in research, and visits from Philippine agencies.

These include the Korean International Cooperation Agency Digital Transformation Center and visits from the Department of Science and Technology, the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Aquatic Natural Resource Research and Development.

McCann cited SU’s linkages with firms in information technology, tourism, agriculture, and education for internships, capstone projects, and curriculum alignment.

SU hosts students from over 20 countries and offers cultural immersion programs, language support, and international student organizations.

On upskilling learners in their chosen careers, McCann asked, “How can a student be a medium for internationalization and global competitiveness?”

To support students’ career development, SU prepared various academic mobility programs, joint research and conferences, international student services, and global accreditation.

“Our graduates must not only be knowledgeable but adaptable, equipped with critical thinking, creativity, and ethical leadership,” she said.

Meanwhile, the president also reiterated SU’s commitment to be a “force for justice, peace, and stewardship for the environment” by crafting environmental policies, principles, and guidelines.

She mentioned the SU Environmental Policy Center, service-learning integration, and the University Sustainability Council as governing bodies for supporting campus-wide environmental justice initiatives.

Position among HEIs

As Asian universities leverage the use of artificial intelligence in education, McCann revealed plans to ensure that technology remains a tool to enhance, rather than replace, the “human connections essential to education.”

“Several departments are exploring AI for personalized learning paths, data analytics, and predictive modeling in their services. Science and engineering departments now also incorporate simulation-based labs,” McCann detailed.

She also urged Sillimanians to “define their unique voice and contribution” and embody wisdom, compassion, and resilience rather than “merely preparing for jobs.”

“Let this convocation inspire us to take bold steps, to collaborate across disciplines and cultures, and to reimagine what is possible when knowledge is aligned with the university’s vision, mission, and goals,” she posed.

The ceremony, which gathered students, faculty, and staff, also marked the first time McCann and the administrators appeared to the Silliman community after the labor dispute between the administration and the faculty union ended.
