Lawn tennis will be back in this year’s All-University Intramurals, the Silliman University Student Government (SUSG) Sports and Recreation Committee (SportsComm) and Athletics Department confirmed, alongside the transfer of venues for some events.
According to SUSG SportsComm Chairperson Aishea Yonson, the reinstatement of the sport was approved by the League of Governors and the Athletics Department following numerous student requests.
However, the move also raised concerns about logistical processes, scheduling, and facilities.
“It wasn’t an easy approval, and it took several discussions and compromises before anything was decided. A big help in pushing this forward was a student who really advocated for [its] return,” Yonson said.
The sport was previously removed due to the unavailability of a tennis court and the absence of a college-level coach, according to Athletics Department Head Dionesio Piñero II.
He mentioned that the Praxevilla Court will serve as the playing area since the Junior High School Kalauman Tennis Court is “not favorable due to dirty surroundings” and requires rehabilitation.
They are currently requesting the SU administration, through the Facilities Management and Administrative Services, to complete the construction and refurbishment of the court.
“The cemented part is ready to play, but only for elementary and junior high school students who are into lawn tennis. But for adults like the college players, it’s not suitable for them to play,” Piñero explained.
Last year, lawn tennis was replaced by pickleball as an alternative event, marking its debut in the annual sports event.
Moreover, the organizers confirmed that this year’s basketball championship, Cheerpop competition, and closing program will not be held in the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex due to an ongoing refurbishment and renovation.
As of writing, Yonson has not confirmed the final venues for both events yet due to logistical challenges, including the acquisition and booking of materials, assets, and venues.
“The committee is still in the process of finalizing remaining adjustments, all while considering additional factors such as the approaching midterm examinations […] Most concerns have now been addressed and settled,” she furthered.
Themed “Embracing Christ’s Peace, Cultivating Care, and Re-Visioning Excellence,” this year’s Intramurals will be held from Feb. 15 to 20.
