In the arms of danger

By Jhian Bolotaulo

We tend to ponder on and regret the decisions we made. We often wish that we could go back in time and instantly change our choices. Since it is impossible, we become hopeless. It is undeniable that our own decisions define the life we are living. This notably applies to politics and elections, especially. We choose and end up regretting it.

A sex-trafficer, a ‘prophet’, a boxer, and an artist– has the Philippines given up on choosing the right candidates to lead our country?

When the senatorial election season approached, Filipinos continued to opt for corrupt individuals who only wished to wield political power for their own wealth and gain.

The Philippines is already as poor as it is, ranking 16th among the poorest countries in Asia and having an estimated amount of 14.4 million families that suffer poverty. Burdened by corruption, these rates will only continue to rise if Filipinos–who are blinded by empty promises–continue to vote for these politicians.

What will our country do now that some of them have won? If we face crises do we just dance to budots? Do we place our faith in God and pray? What will we do if these wealth-driven politicians refuse to do anything for the betterment of our country?

The bigger problem here is not the lack of qualified candidates that are running for senator, but the Filipinos who choose corrupt candidates.

I thought we came to a realization with the current administration. After a short period of time under the leadership of the president, Filipinos started to regret their decisions and wished they had voted for others instead.

This is not to invalidate or question anyone’s personal choices, but if you truly want our country to become better, then why choose bad leaders?

Out of the 65 candidates, there are those that will use their position to change our country for the better. Filipinos should select those candidates instead, not literal criminals.

Filipinos need to remember that not everyone can vote, so those who can must use that advantage to choose good leaders with a transparent background.

In summary, our national issues like debt, poverty, and corruption will only continue to be exacerbated if we still do not pick the right people. The country needs to choose good leaders with transparent backgrounds, not just criminals, to improve its situation.

If these corrupt politicians do win, what will they ever do when facing difficult situations?
