Dancesport, Mr. and Ms. to be excluded from Intrams ‘25

SUSG CheerComm launches cheer pop comp

By Lysander Tiu

Due to concerns on budget and safety, dancesport and Mr. and Ms. will be withdrawn from this year’s Silliman University (SU) All-University Intramurals event lineup.

Meanwhile, the SU Student Government Cheering Committee (SUSG CheerComm) is slated to introduce the cheer-pop dance event as this year’s closing event.

Organized by the SU Athletics and Physical Education Department and SUSG committees, this year’s Intramurals is set to be held from Feb. 24 to Mar. 1.

On the removal of Dancesport, Mr. and Ms.

SUSG Sports and Recreation Committee (SportsComm) Co-Chairperson Rick Japhet Zosima said that the decision to remove dancesport was made through the evaluation of the SU Athletics Committee.

“They concluded that it was not fit to allocate significant funds to a sport with 2 team players compared to investing in team sports that involve a large number of participants,” he said.

Meanwhile, SUSG SportsComm Co-Chairperson Gerarica Villaflores said that the removal of Mr. and Ms. was due to the athletics department’s concerns on the safety of the students.

“Basing off of last year’s Mr. and Ms., [University Athletics Director Asst. Prof. Dionesio Piñero II] pointed out that the use of animals and vehicles posed danger not only to the participants but to the spectators as well,” she shared.

Last year’s candidates for Mr. and Ms. made use of animals such as horses, vehicles such as cars, motorbikes, and bicycles, and props such as fake guns for their entrance gimmicks.

Villaflores also emphasized that Mr. and Ms. will be excluded until a “clear set of guidelines” is made.

Cheer-pop as a comeback event

In contrast to the removal of dancesport and Mr. and Ms., cheer-pop was introduced and marketed as a major event for this year’s Intramurals

Themed “2025 SU Intramurals Cheer-POP Competition: Pinoy Pride,” this year’s competition aims to highlight Pinoy pride and the “rich culture” that makes Filipinos unique.

SUSG CheerComm Co-Chairperson Samantha Rae Sumanoy said that cheer-pop is a comeback event rather than a replacement for dance sport as part of the committee’s mission to bring back cheer dance.

“It was unanimously decided by the Athletics Department to move cheer-pop to the closing because there was no event taking place on that day due to the unfortunate cancellation of Dancesport,” she furthered.

Moreover, SUSG CheerComm Vice-Chairperson Chrysler Brenth Marmolejo clarified that the collective agreement between the SU Athletics Department and college governors decides which activities will be done during Intramurals.

“We have allocated a lot of time to pursue and bring cheer-pop back to [intramurals] because we know that it will be a great way to bring colleges together. We are also confident that the activity itself is engaging,” Marmolejo said.
