To strengthen security and monitoring around campus, Silliman University (SU) Campus Security and Safety Office (CSSO) has installed 88 new CCTV cameras, replacing defective ones since 2024.
According to CSSO Officer-in-Chief Rodolfo Jull Locsin Jr., the new cameras were installed along campus roads, including the entrance and exit gates, the SU Gym, Church, open grounds, and playgrounds.
The CSSO currently performs routine monitoring of the newly-installed cameras, while the older models are no longer operational.
Locsin explained that more than 30 obsolete and non-functional cameras were replaced after producing footage that was blurred, damaged, or unsaved.
“Upon assuming [office] as the OIC Chief Security Officer, a majority of the cameras [were] no longer functioning, except [for] four CCTV cameras that [were] operational but not recording footage,” he said.
The CCTV installation project was approved by the SU Board of Directors in early 2024 and was completed in July of the same year.
Older campus facilities, such as Katipunan Hall, saw a separate installation project of CCTV cameras in 2022, which is monitored and handled by the Information and Communications Technology Division.
Meanwhile, Facilities Management and Administrative Services chief Engr. Debonaire Mamhot said that cameras inside classrooms are monitored by respective colleges.
“Normally, the security [office] would not monitor [classroom CCTVs], but it’s already the college or the school that should monitor [those cameras]; the security [office] will only be assisting them,” he said.
He also verified that all campus security cameras are operational and that no reports of non-functioning cameras have been received since 2025.
Last school year 2024 to 2025, the SU Student Government 35th Student Assembly proposed several resolutions requesting the installation of CCTV units.
A resolution requesting the SU administration, through the CSSO, to install CCTV cameras outside the offices of student councils and student organizations was passed last May 2025.
Another resolution requesting the administration, through the CSSO, to install CCTV cameras at Cimafranca Ballfield was passed in April of the same year.
