Sillimanians hold advocacy-driven fun runs

ISSUE 10 - 10

Amid rampant health-related concerns in the community, various Silliman University (SU) student organizations led five advocacy-driven fun runs spanning from August to October.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) raised awareness for persons with disabilities through a color run dubbed “CAS Me If You Can” last Sept. 20

The said activity aims to allocate 60-percent of the event’s proceeds to the Sto. Niño Children’s Home Foundation, a local orphanage in Luke Wright Street.

According to CAS Student Council Vice-Governor Mikyle Guanzon, they wanted the participants to “know that every step they take and every peso they contribute goes towards a meaningful cause.”

“This event is also a way for us, as student leaders, to show what we can do. We aim not only to raise funds for future activities but to make a positive impact beyond our college,” he added.

Meanwhile, the SU Supreme Law Council (LAW) provided financial assistance to its 2025 bar exam takers through its “SULAW Bar Ops Law in Motion 2” fun run last Aug. 23.

The fundraising activity provided the beneficiaries with review needs, accommodations, food, and other daily necessities.

SULAW Bar Ops Head Lifeel Raga said the fun run was a way for the community to support bar exam takers as a “time-honored tradition in law schools.”

“The committee was privileged to continue this activity, which has also become a popular and sought-after event in Dumaguete, as it is seen as a fun and healthy way to support a cause,” he stated.

The SU Medical Technology Society will also be hosting a fun run on Oct. 4 to raise awareness for HIV and AIDS.

Titled “Kadugo: Run for HIV/AIDS,” the funds raised will go to LoveYourself PH, a community-based and non-profit organization that promotes sexual health and HIV awareness.

Meanwhile, the SU Rotaract Club – Dumaguete Chapter is set to join a Polio-awareness fun run on Oct. 19.

Titled “Run to End Polio,” the comeback event will donate earnings to the Polio Plus Fund of Rotary International, a society dedicated to providing oral Polio vaccines.

The SU Medical School also collaborated with the Negros Oriental Medical Society for a health-awareness fun run on Sept. 28.

Themed “Manggagamot at Mamamayan, Itaguyod ang Pangkalahatang Kalusugan,” the event aims to promote health wellness and community engagement and provide medical equipment for hospitals across Negros Oriental.
